KIMS Hospitals, IndiaTitle: Colchicine in Cardiovascular diseases
Abstract
Colchicine has
been used since ancient times mainly for gout and familial Mediterranean fever
(FMF). The role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis has paved the way for the use of anti-inflammatory drugs in the management of
cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The role of colchicine as a standard of care for
the management of pericarditis has been well established. Several clinical
trials have highlighted the beneficial effects of colchicine in various CV
conditions like coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, post-cardiac
surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions. The widespread availability,
low cost, and favorable side effect profile have made colchicine an attractive
therapeutic option. Cardiologists need to be aware of the real-world clinical
implications of using colchicine.
