Title: Hemochromatosis: Screening, Diagnosis, and Novel Considerations

Abstract

Hemochromatosis is a disorder of iron metabolism that can lead to multi-organ failure and death if unmanaged. Indications for screening include symptoms of iron overload (e.g., liver disease, diabetes, cardiomegaly, hyperpigmentation), family history, and abnormal iron studies. Workup involves serum ferritin levels, transferrin saturation, and genetic testing for the HFE C282Y variant. MRI of the heart and liver is also important for the evaluation of end-organ damage. We will explore the diagnostic criteria for hemochromatosis, considerations for secondary iron overload, current treatment guidelines, and novel therapies in the pipeline. We will also discuss the case of a middle-aged woman who presented with hemochromatosis affecting the heart and liver after only three years of oral iron treatment for iron deficiency anemia.
