Presentation Title:

Left heart disease in pulmonary hypertension- current areas of research and possible future treatments

Abstract

Left heart disease is the most common cause of pulmonary hypertension, a disease that is estimated to affect up to 1% of people worldwide. I will briefly review the pathophysiology of development of pulmonary hypertension from left heart disease, and the haemodynamic changes involved. There are clear guidelines for diagnosing pulmonary hypertension and differentiating from post and pre-and-post capillary hypertension. There are not, however, clear guidelines for management of pulmonary hypertension caused by left heart disease other than treating the left heart disease itself. I will discuss current areas of research, and the exciting possible future treatments of this class of pulmonary hypertension.
